KPress-Calc is a multi-function tool that allows us to solve a lot of different problems. For example, the core is designed to be able to perform any type of calculation, from simple administrative calculations to complex scientific calculations ...

• From a financial standpoint we have not only a set of intrinsic functions (DDB, IRR, NPV, Nper, SYD, SLN, ...) but the user can also define and implement any function or module he wants (ratios, forecasts, .. .). As an example KPress-Calc incorporates, among other modules, the Simplex Method.

 

• The core works with rational arithmetic of arbitrary precision, suitable for defining calculations and processes from a scientific standpoint. We have hundreds of mathematical functions as primaries in the application and, of course, we can define any other function or process we need. For example KPress-Calc incorporates processes like Gauss-Jordan Method, operative with Matrices and Determinants, Equation Systems, ...

   

• From an administrative standpoint KPress-Calc allows multiple calculations (like a calculator), full automatic recalculation when modifying any position, immediate response to operator input, evaluable cells, appearance and size configuration, recording / retrieval of calculations on file format, ...

  The KeyPad is an area of optional use in which we can define and customize the use of KPress-Calc. The user can assign instructions, functions, processes, images, etc.. to any area of the KeyPad, and run the assigned functionality by clicking the mouse on it. It is fully configurable and we have as many pages as we wish. As we can appreciate in the images, in this case, we have created a desktop with different options (Mathematics, Economics, Favorites, ...), and by clicking on any of them it gives us another set of options (eg by pressing on Mathematics it presents Trigonometry, Geometry, Matrices, ...from where we can access to other specialized modules or go back to a previous directory). In the tutorials’ area you may access different videos where you will see the power and some of the main KPress-Calc features.

 

 

 

The core of KPress-Calc has a very powerful and easy programming language, which will allow us to implement any process we need.

• Recursion, lists, all types of operators, hundreds of functions, decision structures, access to databases, connection to other applications ... are some of the features that could use in our processes.

 

• We can define any type of process (program) and store it as a file or assign it to a zone of KeyPad for direct use. In the image you can see a program that solves systems of linear equations using the Gauss-Jordan Method (left), when it is executed it requests the coefficients of the variables (central image) and then it displays the result (right).

   

• In the Programming tab you can find detailed information about this subject.

KPress-Calc allows multiple queries on different types of databases (Access, dBase, SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, ...), creating the corresponding sheets report.

• Using the tools of transformation that this module has we can customize our listings for obtaining fully professional presentations.

 

• Among other available actions we can insert or delete rows and columns, assign fonts, backgrounds, cell types, formulas of a style similar to a spreadsheet, predetermined operations, graphics, images, moving rows or columns, sort by different criteria, merging cells, defining titles, ...

  KPress-Calc has a specific module for graphical representation of mathematical functions.   It allows the joint representation of any number of functions, while providing a report with the values of each function for the selected interval. In KPress-Calc a program is " a set of lines (expressions) that meet a set of syntactic rules that, after being evaluated by the core of the application, provide some useful results for the user ".   There are two sub-modules in KPress-Calc where we can execute programs: in submodule Calculator (where any cell can be established as evaluable and hosting a program), and, especially, in the submodule Evaluator, which provides an environment where we can write and run any type of program and, of course, store it in file format for a later use or to share with other users of KPress-Calc.   We encourage you to create your first program with KPress-Calc, to do it, download and install KPress-Calc on your computer from the tab Downloads (is completely free!), start the application from the icon on your desktop and follow the steps that you can see on the left image:   Access the Evaluator module (programming) by clicking the indicated button. Type in the programming area the instruction write("Hello World"); that uses the function write to show text in quotation marks in the viewer. Press the lower button Execute and observe the result.   Our first program has only one line, but with KPress-Calc we can program any process, no matter how complex it is. In "Basic Programming" and "Advanced Programming" below you can see in detail different programming techniques with KPress-Calc.

If you have not handled any KPress-Calc program we advise you go first the Basic programming section to see the main features and the philosophy of the KPress-Calc programming language.

 

Obviously, there are many complex calculations or processes whose implementation will need the use of some oadvanced features of the KPress-Calc programming language: recursion, lists, libraries, etc.. The following shows a file in PDF format where you can see the explanation of some of these advanced features.

 

 

 

When installing KPress-Calc there are different examples of advanced programming with open source, and you can use them freely. One of them is the Simplex Method ...

 

The Simplex Method (George Dantzig - 1947) is an algorithm that through iterations is approaching to the optimal solution of a linear programming problem.

 

The PDF file below explains the steps followed to implement the Simplex Method with KPress-Calc, also in this link there is a demonstrative video of the use of this program from KPress-Calc for obtaining the optimal investment values starting from an available capital and a set of assumptions that affect the investment.

Hanoi Towers, an interesting example   In the KeyPad settings provided with the KPress-Calc installation, there is an area where the solution to the Towers of Hanoi has been programmed. This consists in passing the disks from the left column to the right column, and we can move a single disk in each movement and it is not allowed to place a disc over a smaller one. The problem has to be solved in the fewest possible steps.   Click on the attached image to see a video where you can see the solution to the problem for the case of a tower with eight disks (solved with KPress-Calc).

 

Investment optimization using Simplex Method

SIMPLEX Method (George Dantzig) is an algorithm that through iterations is approaching to the optimal solution of a linear programming problem.

 

We have implemented the Simplex Method in KPress-Calc (completely free tool) and we will see an example of how to apply it. There are many problems that can be solved with SIMPLEX, in our example we use it for calculating the optimal investment taking into account different conditions:

 

Suppose we have to invest 100,000 euros and we decided to do it in 4 different products (we will call them bonds A, B, C and D).   There are several assumptions that condition our investment: A maximum of 25,000 euros can be invested in bonds C and 20,000 euros in bonds D. The risk for bonds A suggests that the investment does not exceed 15% of total. There is a dependency between A (bonds) and B (bonds) such that B investment must be at least three times A investment. Furthermore, it is requireed that investment in C and D (bonds) is at least half of the investment in A and B (bonds). The estimated annual returns are: bonds A (10%), bonds B (5%), bonds C (4.5%) and bonds D (5.5%).   What is the optimal investment for obtaining the maximum benefits?

Obviously the function to be maximized is Z = 0.1A + 0.05B + 0.045C + 0.055D. The approach and the solution proposed are available in the attached video (you can stop at any time if you want to analyze the content).

 

On programming tab it is explained Simplex Method and its implementation in KPress-Calc; you has to know that this is an advanced programming problem where we have used some of the most powerful features of KPress-Calc.

 

Below we will see the solution to a problem of entertainment: "Hanoi Towers", which you've probably ever seen and you could not solve (depending on the number of disks in the initial tower).

 

 

 

The problem known as Hanoi Towers is a mathematical game invented by Eduard Lucas (known French mathematician) that will help us develop the concentration.

 

 

KPress-Calc power allows user to create any type of process, this time we have added a module that is able to show the list of moves to perform for any number of disks.

 

Above we can access to a video that shows an animation with the necessary movements for the case of 8 disks (255 movements); below we can see the solutions to the game for different configurations about the number of disks.
